It integrates the basic functionalities of a computer into a compact form. It has a clear display, a typical qwerty keyboard and a mouse in one single structure. Furthermore, it has speakers and inbuilt microphones. It is generally powered with electricity. It also contains an inbuilt battery. This enables the user to use it, even with the absence of a power source. One should read about various laptop reviews before buying one.

The battery of the laptop, in its early life, can run up to four to five hours after a complete charge has been done. This generally depends on the purpose for which the system is being used and the battery management settings on it. Whenever the machine is connected with the mains power source, the battery always keeps charging irrespective of, if the system is being used or not.

Initially when they were launched, the manufacturers believed that they will not be able to capture a large segment of the market. They thought it would be limited to only a certain section such as the accountants, military etc. It was thought that would have a very specific and limited use.

As they began to become more and more small and more and more light, its popularity started to increase with other segments of the market too. This is also accredited to that fact that they got better in their design and performance. Still there are a lot of specialized devices in the market and each one suits some kind of usage. A comprehensive list of features is given in the laptop reviews.

The first commercially produced portable computer was IBM5100. As the name suggests, it was built by a leading computer peripheral manufacturing company. It was introduced in the year 1975 and it worked as per the SCAMP prototype. The laptops with the flip open design were introduced in the 1980s. The term laptop was first used for the Gavilan, which was released in the year 1983.

The coloured screens for these devices were first introduced in the year 1991. Since then, they have become a default parameter for any of these machines. Earlier their hard disks were large and bulky but after the introduction of the 3.5 inch drives, their size could be reduced even further making them much lighter.

Depending on the size of the system they can be classified into four major groups of devices. The full size device includes a typical full size keyboard and the screen size is generally more than 10 inches diagonally. The Netbook is a smaller and lighter version of the same machine. It is generally cheaper than its predecessor but has fewer features. Its computing power also is limited.

The tablet PCs offer a unique feature and design to its consumers. They have a touch screen, which can be rotated and then placed on top of the keyboard giving them the form of a pad. These can then be easily used with the help of a stylus. There are some rugged machines available, which can perform well under extreme weather conditions. A lot of laptop reviews can be found on the internet these days.
