Nowadays, people use computers for nearly everything, both on the job and off. Everyday life is filled with digital photos, online videos, spreadsheets, word processing programs, and social media networking sites for nearly every person. Our computers have become an extension of us and we take them with us on vacations, business trips, and even short jaunts to friends. An ultraportable laptop is a perfect solution to our mobile lifestyles.

We tend to have a singular problem with our heavy bulky laptops. Many want to obtain a high end machine instead of a little netbook that is hard to read and use, but do not care to deal with a heavy bulky machine.

The next thing that people consider is the inevitable tradeoff of weight and portability and power and affordability. It is easy to find small lightweight machines, but you typically will have a machine that does not have the capabilities you want. Luckily, the amount of competition n the laptop market is aiding the consumer in the area of cost. Lightweight laptop computers with high-end features are more affordable each days as the manufacturers reduce their prices on higher quality machines in order to obtain a higher percentage of the market share.

For many who are forced into business travel, the need for an ultraportable laptop is high, making the cost issue irrelevant. Some businesses will pay a portion or all of the cost for such a machine for their workers. However, this is not true for everyone, especially for those who want one for personal reasons. These people typically look at price as a large factor in determining their purchase.

One consideration is the weight and size of the computer. Super thin laptops typically do not include an optical drive of any kind. While lightweight, there are some limitations in these portable PCs. Other computers may be heavier than their low profile counterparts, yet still may be considered an ultraportable laptop. Normally, they have solid-state HDDs instead of a motor driven drive.

Solid-state HDDs are usually much faster than the typical optical drive and usually last longer due to no moving parts to break down due to use and wear. However, this longevity comes at a price. This type of HDD is more expensive than the others are. Another concern when thinking about portability and low profile is the material used in the chassis.

Typically, the case is made of plastic and pieces of metal. A case manufactured completely from a metal, like aluminum, will be more difficult to damage than others are. However, once again, this will increase the price. Durability has an associated cost. This is very important when shopping for low-profile laptop computers.

The components are small and delicate and could be easily damaged should they suffer a bump or an increased amount of pressure. The metal casing will help prevent these forces from being applied to the components, thus allowing your machine to last longer than it might if the casing were made of primarily plastic.
